Like myeloma, AL amyloidosis is a plasma cell disorder. In these patients, abnormal proteins are deposited in tissues and organs. The accumulation of amyloid in tissues and organs gradually causes damage and illness, because it interferes with the structure and function of normal tissues. Ten to fifteen percent of myeloma patients have co-existing amyloidosis. The treatment for amyloidosis is often similar to myeloma.
