Ajai Chari, MD

Attending Physician, Medical Oncology

Oncologist, Dr. Ajai Chari, MD is a specialist in hematologic oncology and is a part of our nationally-renowned Multiple Myeloma and Transplant Program.

Over the last few years, he served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he founded and developed the multiple myeloma program and was also a member of the stem cell transplant program. He was the principal investigator on several clinical trials - including investigator initiated studies as well as cooperative group and industry studies. He has also given numerous lectures on plasma cell disorders and has served as a moderator and abstract reviewer for the American Society of Hematology in this field.

Dr. Chari has a longstanding dedication to research, having been awarded two research fellowships from the National Institutes of Health as an undergraduate, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellowship during medical school, and an Amgen Research Award during hematology/oncology fellowship. The culmination of his research efforts have been a number of articles, book chapters, and abstracts.

Dr. Chari has also been recognized for excellence in the education of physicians in training. At the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, he was chosen by the residents in internal medicine to receive the Best Junior Faculty Teacher Award in 2008 and also selected to receive the Ewig Teaching Award by the Department of Internal Medicine.

Ajai Chari graduated with a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Psychology from Stanford University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to receive his MD from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine in 1999. He completed residency in internal medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Medical Center and subsequently completed his fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Oncology, and Hematology and is a member of the American Society of Hematology and American Society of Clinical Oncology.
